COSMETIC FORMULATION TROUBLESHOOTING CONSULTANT | CLOWNHAUS®

FORMULATION TROUBLESHOOTING ASSISTANCE

CLOWNHAUS® provides Formulation Troubleshooting for cosmetic products that are unstable, underperforming, aesthetically unsatisfactory, or otherwise refusing to behave as intended.

This service is designed for situations where the formula already exists, but the outcome does not justify confidence. The problem may be visible as separation, viscosity drift, weak sensorial performance, incompatibility, preservation concerns, poor application, or a finished product that simply does not feel resolved.

Troubleshooting is not guesswork with better vocabulary. Most formulation problems are structural. The visible issue is often only the surface expression of a deeper weakness in formula logic, processing assumptions, or development decisions. The task is to identify the likely fault lines before more time and money are wasted correcting the wrong issue.

COSMETIC FORMULATION STABILITY SUPPORT

Formulation instability is rarely a single-problem event. Separation, viscosity drift, texture changes, pH shifts, preservation concerns, incompatibility, poor sensory performance, or manufacturing variability can all point to underlying structural issues within the formulation system.

CLOWNHAUS® provides formulation troubleshooting assistance for cosmetic products requiring clearer technical interpretation before further development, reformulation, scale-up, or market exposure.

This service helps identify likely pressure points within the formulation, assess possible causes of instability or underperformance, and provide structured guidance on how the product may be improved from a formulation, processing, ingredient, or manufacturing perspective.

WHY COSMETIC TROUBLESHOOTING NEEDS STRUCTURE

Formula problems are often misread. Brands respond by changing several ingredients at once, copying competitor systems without logic, or increasing use levels in the hope that more will solve what better structure should have solved.

That usually makes the issue harder to interpret. Reactive fixes can obscure the actual cause, create new instability, or send the development process into repeated cycles of expensive guesswork.

Structured troubleshooting improves the odds of targeting the right issue instead of merely moving the symptoms around.

WHAT THIS SERVICE INCLUDES

Formulation Troubleshooting is a corrective technical review service for products that already exist in formula form but are not behaving as intended.

Rather than building a new concept or directing early-stage development, this service examines an existing technical problem and seeks to determine where the likely issue sits. It is used when something is going wrong and the current product outcome is technically or commercially unsatisfactory.

The objective is not to tinker blindly. It is to improve the quality of correction by reviewing the structure of the problem more critically.

WHO THIS SERVICE IS DESIGNED FOR

This service is suitable for founders, brands, labs, private label businesses, and product developers dealing with formulas that already exist but are unstable, underperforming, or otherwise not commercially acceptable.

It is particularly useful where the formula is mid-development or already sampled, but the product is clearly not holding together as intended.

SCOPE OF FORMULATION TROUBLESHOOTING SUPPORT

CLOWNHAUS® supports Formulation Troubleshooting as a technical review and corrective advisory service. It does not automatically include bench trials, laboratory testing, plant intervention, or physical reformulation work unless separately scoped.

The focus is on identifying likely causes and improving the direction of corrective action.

WHAT THIS SERVICE GENERALLY INCLUDES

The client will receive troubleshooting assistance for product instability in the form of a Cosmetic Product Formulation Analysis Document, which will contain the following:

  1. The most likely cause(s) of instability for the associated cosmetic product.
  2. Suggested ways to improve the stability of the cosmetic product.
  3. Reasons as to why suggestions have been made to improve the stability of the cosmetic product.
  4. Suggested formula sheet & corresponding method of manufacture based on the best solution. (x1)
  5. References to raw material suppliers in South Africa for suggestions made.

HOW THIS SERVICE DIFFERS

This service corrects the formula when it is already going wrong. It is used when a product already exists and the problem needs to be identified more precisely.

Where Research & Development supports active formulation progression, Formulation Troubleshooting is used when the existing formula is unstable, weak, or technically unsatisfactory and requires corrective diagnosis.

  • Instability & Separation

This refers to problems where the formula is no longer holding together as a unified system. It includes issues such as phase separation, creaming, sedimentation, syneresis, oil bleed, or visible breakdown over time. The purpose of reviewing instability and separation is to understand where the structural weakness lies and why the product is failing to remain physically coherent.

  • Viscosity or Rheology Problems

This focuses on whether the product’s thickness, flow behaviour, and structural response are behaving as intended. It covers problems such as the formula becoming too thin, too thick, stringy, lumpy, inconsistent, or unstable under stress. It also considers whether the product’s rheology supports filling, dispensing, application, and long-term performance in a commercially acceptable way.

  • Poor Spread or Skin Feel

This addresses issues with how the product applies and feels during and after use. It includes drag, poor slip, excessive tack, greasiness, heaviness, waxiness, uneven glide, poor rub-out, or an after feel that does not align with the intended product profile. The aim is to identify why the product feels underwhelming, awkward, or inconsistent from a sensorial perspective.

  • Ingredient Incompatibility

This refers to situations in which ingredients do not behave well together within the formula system. It may involve actives interfering with emulsifiers, polymers clashing with electrolytes, preservatives being compromised, fragrances destabilising the system, or other chemical or physical conflicts that weaken performance, appearance, or stability. The purpose is to identify where the formula contains incompatible material relationships.

  • Preservation-Related Concerns

This focuses on whether the preservation strategy appears appropriate for the product type and formula system. It considers whether the preservative choice, preservation environment, or broader formulation conditions may be undermining microbiological robustness. It is not a substitute for formal preservative efficacy testing, but it helps identify formulation-level concerns that may be weakening the preservation approach.

  • Process-Linked Issues

This looks at whether the problem may be arising not only from the formula composition itself but also from how the product is made. It includes issues related to mixing order, temperature control, shear, cooling profile, dispersion quality, hold times, addition sequence, or other processing variables that can materially affect the finished product. The goal is to determine whether the weakness is procedural as much as compositional.

  • Structural Imbalance in the Formula

This refers to the broader internal imbalance of the formulation system. It considers whether the formula is overbuilt in some areas and under-supported in others, whether key functions are out of balance, and whether the product lacks the structural harmony needed to perform consistently. This is often where a formula appears workable at first glance but fails because its internal architecture is poorly weighted.

  • Mismatch Between Intended & Actual Product Behaviour

This addresses the gap between what the product was supposed to do and what it is actually doing in use or over time. A product may have been intended to feel elegant, stable, lightweight, rich, fast-absorbing, or high-performance, yet behave in a way that contradicts that goal. This component helps determine why the finished result is failing to align with the original brief, claims direction, or market expectations.
