WHAT IS THIS SERVICE FOR

Research & Development is a technical development service used when a product is moving beyond concept and requires a more disciplined formulation pathway.

This is where the product begins to take shape as a real formulation rather than a strategic idea alone. The work may involve supporting ingredient selection logic, formulation direction, sensorial objectives, structural balance, product-type suitability, and broader technical coherence as development progresses.

The objective is not simply to produce a formula. It is to support the development of a product that makes better technical sense and is more likely to withstand the pressures of sampling, revision, and later execution.

WHY DEVELOPMENT QUALITY MATTERS IN COSMETIC FORMULATION

Most product problems are built in quietly. They begin with weak formulation logic, mismatched ingredient systems, poor texture strategy, unrealistic brief expectations, or product structures that sound good on paper but do not hold together convincingly in practice.

Once development starts moving, those issues become harder and more expensive to correct. Weak decisions made early can lead to repeated revisions, unstable or underwhelming samples, poor scale-up prospects, or products that never feel fully resolved.

Better development quality does not guarantee a perfect product. It does, however, reduce the likelihood of avoidable failure being engineered into the product from the beginning.

WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR

This service is suitable for founders, indie brands, private label businesses, and cosmetic companies that are actively developing a product and require stronger technical support during that process.

It is particularly useful where the concept has already been defined, but the formula now needs more disciplined direction in order to become a viable product rather than a promising idea.

  • Formulation Direction

This focuses on the overall technical pathway the product should take as it moves from concept into a functioning formula. It helps define how the product should be built, what kind of system it requires, which technical priorities should lead the development process, and whether the formula is moving in a direction that supports the intended performance, sensorial profile, claims direction, and market position.

  • Ingredient System Logic

This examines how the ingredients work together as a system rather than as isolated additions. It considers whether the selected materials are compatible, whether they support the intended product structure, whether their functions are appropriately balanced, and whether the formula has been built with enough technical reasoning to behave coherently in practice.

  • Texture & Sensorial Strategy

This defines how the product should feel during application and after use, and how that sensorial experience should support the product’s intended identity. It considers spread, slip, richness, drag, absorption, residue, afterfeel, and overall elegance, ensuring that texture is treated as a deliberate part of performance rather than an accidental by-product of formulation.

  • Product-Type Suitability

This assesses whether the proposed formulation approach actually makes sense for the type of product being developed. It considers whether the format, structure, viscosity, ingredient profile, and expected behaviour are appropriate for the category, the intended user, and the way the product is supposed to function in real use.

  • Stability-Conscious Thinking

This involves making formulation decisions with an awareness of how the product is likely to hold up over time and under different conditions. It includes consideration of emulsion integrity, viscosity drift, phase-separation risk, colour or odour changes, packaging interactions, and other structural weaknesses that may not be obvious at first but can become costly later if ignored during development.

  • Broad Compatibility Considerations

This assesses whether the various parts of the product are likely to work well together, both within the formula and with the wider product system. It includes compatibility among raw materials, actives, preservatives, fragrances, colourants, packaging, and expected usage conditions, helping to reduce the risk of instability, performance conflicts, or other avoidable formulation problems.

  • Technical Refinement During Development

This refers to the process of improving the formulation as development progresses so that the product becomes more resolved, more efficient, and more aligned with its intended brief. It may involve adjusting ingredient levels, rebalancing the system, improving sensory attributes, addressing weaknesses, and tightening the formula so that it performs more convincingly rather than merely functioning at a basic level.

  • Overall Formulation Coherence

This is the broader assessment of whether the formula actually holds together as a complete product system. It considers whether the structure, ingredient choices, texture, functionality, stability-minded decisions, and product expectations all work together logically. The goal is to ensure that the formulation feels intentional and technically sound as a whole, not just acceptable in isolated parts.

The exact focus depends on the stage and complexity of the project, but the aim is always to strengthen the development pathway before weaknesses compound further.

WHAT YOU MAY LEAVE WITH

The outcome may include stronger formulation direction, clearer technical decision-making, and a more coherent development pathway for the product.

Depending on the scope, this may support the next stage of development, help refine the current pathway, or improve the quality of technical discussions with external partners or laboratories.

HOW THIS SERVICE DIFFERS

This service develops the product technically. It is used when the project is already moving into real formulation work and needs stronger technical direction.

Where Product Concept Development defines what the product should be, Research & Development helps shape how that product begins to function as a formulation.

SCOPE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT

CLOWNHAUS® supports Research & Development through technical advisory and development services. This automatically includes laboratory execution, microbiological testing, and basic stability testing. This does not automatically include laboratory execution, microbiological testing, full stability testing, toxicological review, or manufacturing sign-off unless separately scoped.

The focus is on improving the structure and quality of the development work itself.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need Preservative Efficacy Testing (PET)?

While we are responsible for ensuring we select a preservative that, in theory, will provide suitable long-term preservation of your product, the only sure way to know if it is actually effective is to conduct PET. PET is a way of ensuring your product is suitably preserved using practical methods. Is something likely to go wrong? Not in theory. Can something go wrong? In practice, unexpected results can occur. We can't know this without it being tested. Ensuring preservative efficacy in practice is your responsibility, so you should get this test done on al water-based products.

Do I need stability testing?

While we are responsible for ensuring we prepare a formulation that will be theoretically stable over 2-3 years, the only sure way to know if it is actually stable is to conduct stability for at least 30 months in real-time. Stability testing is a way of ensuring your product will have the anticipated shelf life using practical methods. Is something likely to go wrong? Not in theory. Can something go wrong? In practice, unexpected results can occur. We can't know this without it being tested. Ensuring stability in practice is your responsibility, so you should get this done on all formulations. It should be part of your planned R&D investment and help prevent product recalls, which would be your responsibility. If you plan to export a product or have a secondary sunscreen product (i.e. foundation or moisturiser with SPF), you will need to conduct stability testing as the shelf life justification for these products is required.

Do I need a lab batch?

If you want to conduct evaluations of your product larger than the small samples we send you (for example, performance or stability evaluations) then yes, you should have a lab batch made.

CLOWNHAUS® has finished development - now what?

Once we have provided you with the formulation, method and supplier details, you will need to approach manufacturers to get quotes on the product based on your batch size. You should ensure you get a "pre-production sample" from the manufacturer prior to manufacture being done, and this should be EXACTLY what we have prepared for you. We cannot emphasise this strongly enough. If it is not exactly the same, you need to ask your manufacturer if they have used the same suppliers we have listed and if they have followed our method. If they have, it should match. If they say they have and it doesn't match, we can investigate what has happened, but we will need to charge project management fees.

My contract manufacturer wants to change part of the formula; should I let them?

No. There are 2 big reasons for this.

  • If they change any aspect of the formula, they often won't provide you with the changes if they make them, leaving you without the formula you take to market.
  • If they change it and something goes wrong and you have authorised the change, you could be left with a failed batch that you have technically authorised without knowing what or why changes have occurred.

How long does all of this take?

If all goes well, it will take 2 - 3 months to finalise your development, from first discussions to sample approvals. If all goes well, it will usually take an additional 9 months for most cosmetic products to move through accelerated stability and manufacture to be ready for launch. Short-cutting the process is unprofessional and can lead to product quality issues and, at worst, product recalls.
